In a nutshell

The bollo auto — officially the tassa automobilistica regionale (regional vehicle road tax) — is an annual tax you pay simply for owning a car registered with the PRA (Pubblico Registro Automobilistico — Italy's national vehicle registry). In Rome, the tax goes to the Regione Lazio (Lazio Regional Government). The amount depends on your engine's power in kW and its emissions class (Euro 0–6). No bill arrives in your letterbox: you are responsible for remembering the deadline.

At a glance

Cost Variable. Example: small city car, 70 kW, Euro 6 in Lazio ≈ €200/year.
Timeline Payment due by the last day of the month following the expiry date.
Where in Rome Online (IO app, bollonet.aci.it, online banking), tobacconists, post offices, ACI delegations.
Documents you need Just the licence plate — the system calculates everything automatically.

How to calculate the amount

The calculation uses two pieces of data from your carta di circolazione (vehicle registration document — or the DU, the combined document issued since 2020):

  • Field P.2 = engine power in kW
  • Field V.9 = emissions class (e.g. "Euro 6 D-Temp")

Lazio rates for passenger cars:

Emissions class Rate up to 100 kW Rate above 100 kW
Euro 0 €3.00/kW €4.50/kW
Euro 1 €2.90/kW €4.35/kW
Euro 2 €2.80/kW €4.20/kW
Euro 3 €2.70/kW €4.05/kW
Euro 4, 5, 6 €2.58/kW €3.87/kW

A few concrete examples:

  • Fiat Panda 1.0, 51 kW, Euro 6: 51 × 2.58 = €131.58/year
  • Volkswagen Golf, 110 kW, Euro 6: (100 × 2.58) + (10 × 3.87) = €296.70/year
  • Older city car, 44 kW, Euro 2: 44 × 2.80 = €123.20/year

To skip the maths, use the official ACI calculatorACI (Automobile Club d'Italia — Italy's national motoring authority and vehicle-registry manager): enter your plate number and get the exact figure, including any applicable reductions or arrears.

When it's due and how much time you have

The tax expires 12 months after your last payment. If you paid in February 2025, the next due date is end of February 2026. You then have the entire following month as a grace period: in this example, paying by 31 March 2026 is still on time with no penalty.

If you have just bought a new car or completed a transfer of ownership, your first payment covers the period starting after the natural expiry of the previous owner's last payment.

How to pay

All channels use the PagoPA system (Italy's unified public-payment platform): payment is instant and fully traceable. All you need is your licence plate number.

Online channels:

  • IO app (with SPID (Italy's digital identity for accessing online public services) or CIE (Italian electronic ID card)): go to "Payments" → "Bollo auto" → enter plate → pay by card or bank account.
  • ACI Bollonet: bollonet.aci.it — automatic calculation and card payment.
  • Online banking: look for "PagoPA" or "Pagamenti spontanei" → taxes/vehicle tax → select Regione Lazio → enter plate.
  • Regione Lazio website: tassa automobilistica regionale → "Paga online".

In-person channels:

  • ACI delegations (find your nearest one)
  • Post offices
  • Tobacconists on the Lottomatica network
  • SISAL and Banca 5 outlets

Exemptions and reductions

Electric vehicles. Full exemption for the first 5 years from the date of registration. From year six onwards, you pay 25% of the equivalent kW rate.

Historic vehicles over 30 years old. Exempt from the ordinary road tax. Owners who drive them on public roads pay only a flat historic-vehicle circulation fee of €28.40, but only if the vehicle is registered with a recognised historic register (ASI, Storico Lancia, FIAT, Alfa Romeo, FMI).

Vehicles between 20 and 29 years old. 50% reduction if registered with ASI or an equivalent historic register.

People with disabilities (Legge 104/1992). Full exemption on one vehicle per household, within the engine-size limits set by law (2,000 cc petrol, 2,800 cc diesel, 4,000 cc electric/hybrid). The application must be submitted to ACI or to Agenzia delle Entrate (Italy's tax-revenue agency) with the Legge 104 disability certificate.

What happens if you don't pay

Once the grace month passes, penalties kick in, calculated as a percentage of the tax owed:

Delay Penalty (ravvedimento operoso — voluntary late-payment correction)
Within 14 days 0.1% for each day
Day 15–30 1.5%
Day 31–90 1.67%
Within 1 year 3.75%
More than 1 year 30% + 0.5% interest per half-year

Daily legal interest (2.5% in 2026) is added on top in all cases. If you ignore notices for years, the Regione Lazio passes the file to Agenzia delle Entrate Riscossione (the tax-collection arm of the revenue agency), which can impose a fermo amministrativo (administrative freeze) on the vehicle: you cannot drive it or sell it until the full debt is settled.

To sort out a late payment, use the same ACI calculator, entering the original due date — it automatically works out the penalties and interest. You then pay via PagoPA and keep the receipt.

Mistakes to avoid

  1. Falling for SMS or email scams saying "your road tax is overdue, pay here". Regione Lazio never sends SMS or emails with payment links. Official communications arrive only by post, with a PagoPA payment slip. Ignore any such messages.
  2. Using unofficial third-party sites that "calculate your road tax". Only use aci.it or regione.lazio.it. Sites that ask for your card details to "calculate" the tax are scams.
  3. Discarding the PagoPA receipt. The tax has a 3-year statute of limitations, but keep the receipt for at least 5 years. If you receive an incorrect assessment notice (you've already paid, or the car has been sold), you have 60 days to file a ricorso in autotutela (self-defence appeal) with Regione Lazio — free of charge.

Special cases

You have just moved to Lazio from another Italian region. Your first payment after the move goes to Regione Lazio. Update your records at the PRA through ACI (the process is free and can be done online).

The car was stolen or scrapped. If you file a theft report or obtain a scrapping certificate, road tax is no longer owed from the following month. Notify the PRA.

The car is on a lease or long-term hire agreement. The road tax is included in your monthly payment and managed by the leasing company. Check your contract.

The car is jointly registered to more than one person. There is only one tax payment per vehicle. Any of the co-owners can pay it. For regional jurisdiction, the residence of the first named owner determines which region collects.
