Sportello Amico in Rome: Where to Submit Your Residence Permit Kit
Not every post office in Rome accepts the residence-permit envelope. Here's how to find the nearest Sportello Amico counter, with a full list by district.
In a nutshell
Sportello Amico (literally "friendly counter") is a dedicated desk found only in certain authorised post offices — it's the only place where you can hand in the postal kit for a Permesso di soggiorno (residence permit for non-EU citizens). If you walk into a regular post office that doesn't have this service, they'll send you away. You'll recognise it by the smiley-face icon at the entrance and a counter separate from the regular cashiers.

How to find the nearest office
There is no single fixed, always-up-to-date list: Poste Italiane periodically reorganises which locations are authorised. Before you travel, check with one of these methods:
Freephone 803.160 — free from landlines and mobiles, Mon–Sat 08:00–20:00. Ask the operator for the nearest Sportello Amico to your postcode; they'll give you 3–4 options with current opening hours. Calling from abroad: +39 06 4526 3160 (international rates apply).
"Ufficio Postale" app — free on iOS and Android. Enter your postcode or turn on location services, filter by "Sportello Amico," and you'll also see real-time queue availability.
poste.it/cerca — select "Sportello Amico" in the search box, enter your neighbourhood or postcode, and get a map of authorised offices with hours and phone numbers.

Hours and booking
Most Rome post offices with a Sportello Amico are open Mon–Fri 08:20–19:05 and Sat 08:20–12:35. Some outer-district offices close earlier at 13:45. The Sportello Amico counter is not always open all day — in many offices it operates mornings only.
Some offices set a daily cap on applications accepted (20–30 kits). At busy times, numbers run out by 09:00. Arrive early.
You can skip the long wait by booking a slot in advance:

Booking is not compulsory, but it can save you up to an hour of waiting.
Mistakes to avoid
- Going to a post office without a Sportello Amico. The office cannot accept the kit and will send you away. Always check first with the app or the freephone number.
- Showing up with an incomplete envelope. The counter will refuse the kit if a signature is missing on the form, the marca da bollo is not attached, the payment slip is absent, or documents are missing. This is not a final rejection — fix whatever is wrong and come back even the same day. Do not buy a new yellow envelope.
- Sending someone else to hand in your kit. Submission is personal: the operator checks your identity document. Nobody can submit the kit on your behalf.
Special cases
The counter is temporarily closed. Some offices suspend the service for holidays or building works. Call 803.160 before travelling. You can go to any other authorised office, even in a different Municipio.
You paid the wrong payment slip. The operator will flag this before accepting the envelope. You can make a top-up payment at the regular cashier desk in the same office. Keep any overpayment receipt so you can claim a refund later.
The daily number cap is already full. Go to a different office. Check the evening before on the app to see which offices are less busy — Mon and Fri afternoons are typically quieter.
You need civil-registry certificates. The Sportello Amico can print civil-status certificates on the spot (birth, marriage, residence, family status, citizenship) thanks to its connection to ANPR (Anagrafe Nazionale — national civil registry database). The cost is roughly €5–15 depending on the type of certificate.
