In a nutshell

A Consultorio Familiare (public family health clinic run by the local health authority) is a free public health service β€” no exceptions. Anyone physically present in Italy can walk in: Italians, EU citizens, non-EU residents, undocumented migrants, and people without a fixed address. Rome has around 60 clinics spread across all 15 Municipi (Rome's 15 administrative districts). Inside you will find gynaecologists, midwives, psychologists, social workers and cultural mediators β€” a multidisciplinary team focused on women's health, family welfare and adolescent wellbeing, with no financial or bureaucratic barriers.

What you can do at a family health clinic

The Consultorio Familiare network was established by Legge 405/1975 as a community-based service for women's health, couples and children. The idea is preventive care, counselling and early diagnosis close to home.

You can walk in without an appointment and without paying for:

Gynaecology and obstetrics

  • Preventive gynaecological check-ups, Pap smears, HPV tests
  • Diagnosis and treatment of infections and sexually transmitted diseases
  • Contraception: the pill, IUD (coil), subcutaneous implant, morning-after pill and 5-day emergency pill
  • Antenatal check-ups, ultrasounds and prenatal tests
  • Antenatal classes and breastfeeding support
  • IVG (voluntary termination of pregnancy under Legge 194/1978)

Psychology and social support

  • Individual psychological counselling for women, men and adolescents
  • Family mediation in cases of separation or parenting disputes
  • Parenting support, and guidance on fostering and adoption
  • Integrated support pathways for survivors of domestic and sexual violence (Codice Rosa β€” priority fast-track)

Adolescents

  • Youth and Adolescent Spaces (Spazio Giovani/Adolescenti): confidential consultations from age 14, without parents present, on contraception, sexuality and personal concerns

Cultural mediation

  • Cultural mediators in Arabic, Romanian, Chinese, Spanish, French, English, Russian, Ukrainian, Bengali and other languages
  • Dedicated services for migrant women, asylum seekers and cases of FGM (female genital mutilation)

Who can access and how the first visit works

You can go to any clinic regardless of which Municipio you live in. No appointment, no documents, no residence permit required. Access is guaranteed even if you only hold an STP (Straniero Temporaneamente Presente β€” temporary health card for undocumented migrants) or an ENI card (equivalent for EU citizens without registration), and adolescents can attend alone.

The process is straightforward:

  1. Walk into the nearest clinic during opening hours (generally Mon–Fri 8:00–17:00; some locations also open Saturday mornings).
  2. Speak to the receptionist β€” usually a midwife or social worker β€” and explain what you need. No documents are required.
  3. Fill in a short intake form with your basic details (first and last name is enough).
  4. You will be given an appointment for the specialist visit, usually within 1–4 weeks. For urgent situations (termination, domestic violence) the pathway is prioritised: 24–48 hours.

All follow-up visits are free.

Mistakes to avoid

  1. The clinic is always free. If anyone asks you to pay, you are not at a public ASL (Azienda Sanitaria Locale β€” your local public-health authority) clinic. Private centres with similar-sounding names are paid medical practices.
  2. You do not need a residence permit. Staff cannot report your status to the authorities (D.Lgs. 286/1998, art. 35 of the Immigration Code). You can attend even if you are undocumented.
  3. Parents are not notified if a minor accesses contraception or requests an abortion. Professional confidentiality always applies, within the limits set by Legge 194 for minors requesting termination without parental consent.

Special cases

Surviving domestic violence? Call 1522 (free hotline, 24/7, available in 12 languages) for the national anti-violence line. Both clinics and Pronto Soccorso (A&E / emergency rooms) operate the Codice Rosa fast-track pathway for priority access. In Rome you can also contact the Casa Internazionale delle Donne (Via della Lungara 19) or the Differenza Donna association.

Non-Italian speaker or migrant? The clinics of ASL Roma 1, 2 and 3 have dedicated cultural mediators. Access is guaranteed without documents, and the mediation service is free. The INMP (Istituto Nazionale per la promozione della salute delle popolazioni Migranti e per il contrasto delle malattie della PovertΓ , Via San Gallicano 25/a, Rome) also offers a specialist multi-ethnic team.

Teenager? You can go alone from age 14. The Youth Spaces (Spazi Adolescenti) run by ASL Roma 1, 2 and 3 are staffed by professionals specifically trained for this age group, covering contraception, sexuality, personal concerns and emotional difficulties.

Fertility problems? The clinic will do an initial consultation and then refer you to the public assisted-reproduction centres (Policlinico Umberto I, Sant'Eugenio).
